A Quick History of Lawns

Back in the day, before lawn care services began, fields were maintained by livestock. There would usually be horses, cows, sheep and other animals like rabbits feeding. Over time and with continual grazing, the weeds started growing low on its own and formed something similar to what we have today.

There were rich people who had yards cut with scything and shearing. Most people, however, had compacted dirt walkways, gardens, and crops. The focus was on making a living through farming and working all day. Not much time was available for landscaping.

The fad first started around 1800. Different kinds of grasses were brought over from numerous countries and were tested in American soil. Later on, suburban developments popped up and with shorter work weeks, yards became a place of leisure and beauty. England was a bit ahead of America. In 1830, an Englishmen by the name of Edwin Budding created the first mower. The idea came from a cutting reel in a cloth mill. The knowledge soon crossed the Atlantic Ocean and Americans started making mowers too.

A Modern Overview

A lawn is an area of grass, cut at an even, low height, existing for comfort, fun, or aesthetic purposes. Not many people know it’s really just a weed, oftentimes seen in unkempt fields growing over a foot high.

Yards are cared for all around the world. Parks use the cut weeds as a padding for play as well as a means for erosion control. Homeowners use the area for a range of activities. Kids get the most use out of them, playing catch, or throwing a Frisbee. Either way, a big patch of green would look more pleasing than brown. Most outdoor sports are played on turf, which provides a cushion if someone falls and keeps the dirt from turning to dust or washing away.

There are multiple types of grass strains for landscaping. The two main types are split into warm and cool season; some grow better in hot temperatures as opposed to cool ones. Sports teams often use a thick, tough type which will withstand abuse. Houses are more often seen with softer, taller types which create a playful atmosphere.

Overseeding, a service that mixes two types of strains can make a strong yard. For instance, some people mix a warm season with a cool season or mix a weed resistant kind with an easy maintenance variety.
