Lawn Care Calendar

Here is a guide showing when and what we do each month for annual contracts.

Every month we can

  • Dead head flowers to create new blooms (take out dead blooms, stems, or anything brown and tacky looking for aesthetics)
  • Prune trees and smaller plants unwanted growth
  • Weed islands and flower beds
  • Blow leaves and debris off lawn and hard surfaces
  • Pine Straw and Mulch are available year round
  • Remove tree suckers and vines from shrubs
  • Shape shrubs
  • Edge borders and islands on a regular basis
  • Treat fire ant piles

January

  • Start cutting Liriope, pampas, and Ornamental grasses
  • Start crape myrtle pruning (shape up and prepare for new growth)
  • Winter shrub shaping

February

  • Apply Spring pre-emergent to all yards (prevents crabgrass, goosegrass and other summer weed seeds from sprouting) (through April)
  • Reseed Fescue/Aerate/Fertilize near end of month (through April)
  • Remove fescue in Bermuda/ Zoysia

March

  • ***Begin full scale turf mowing, trimming, and edging (through November)
  • Move fall-sown annuals and biennials

April

  • Plant summer annuals at the end of March.  Place Petunias, Geraniums, Sunflowers, and Marigolds in the sun and Impatiens, Begonias, and Coleus in the shade
  • Start pruning flowering trees/shrubs immediately after blooming (redbud, dogwood, azaleas, forsythia and weigela)

May

  • Fertilize all warm-season yards if necessary (through August)
  • Mulch flower beds for moisture holding, temperature control, and weed prevention
  • Apply post-emergent weed killer (Do not apply to drought-stressed fescue.) (through August)

June

  • Plant Crape Myrtles and Hydrangeas and bulbs such as Dahlias, Tigridias, Cannas and Tuberoses.
  • Prune junipers, yews, arborvitaes and hemlocks.
  • Keep lawn, bushes, and flowers watered during hot weather. Soak thoroughly once a week This includes Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Camellias

July

  • Fertilize Crape Myrtles, Butterfly Bushes and Hydrangeas
  • Fix brown or dead spots in lawn
  • Trim Wisteria to promote blooming for the following year

August

  • Plant annuals like Zinnias and Petunias no later than early August for fall bloom
  • Good time to deadhead faded flowers from Crape Myrtles
  • Remove any Bermuda growing in fescue areas and prepare for fall seeding

September

  • Seed warm weather grasses such as Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede
  • Reseed Fescue/Aerate/Fertilize near end of month (through November)
  • Start winter planting.  Till soil beds and enrich, then plant winter bulbs and tubers for both winter color and spring blooms such as Daffodils, Hyacinths, Crocus, Tulips, Pansies, Violas and Snapdragons
  • Plant new perennials. Move spring perennials
  • Apply winter pre-emergent (prevents chickweed and other winter weeds from sprouting) (through October)

October

  • Overseed all grass types if needed and keep watered
  • Topdress to smooth out divots and craters

November

  • Seed warm weather grasses such as Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede if needed
  • Cut back faded perennials
  • Start planting or moving trees and shrubs while dormant like Camellias (let root system develop before onset of intense heat and dryness of summer)

December

  • Prune fruit trees (remove any damaged, diseased, or  odd angled branches to control height and harvestability) (through February)
  • Prune hardwoods/ dormant trees except for ones with early blooms (Cut lower limbs off) (through February)
  • Mulch around small plants for cold protection (pansy beds or emerging bulb foliage)
